The Blues Brothers (1980)

The story behind the creation of The Blues Brothers couldn’t be more “Hollywood”. It’s been reported that Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi created “The Blues Brothers” characters while on the set of Saturday Night Live in 1976. Four years later, they released a musical comedy directed by John Landis. The movie tells the story of Jake Blues, a recently released prisoner, who assembles his old band to save the Catholic home where he and brother Elwood were raised. Several high-speed chases ensue in their “Bluesmobile”, a refurbished police car.

Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)

Is there anything quite as thrilling as a good heist movie?  Jam packed with stars such as Nicholas Cage, Angelina Jolie, and Robert Duvall to name a few, it is simply a classic. Nicholas Cage plays a car thief that must come out of retirement to get his younger brother, Kip, out of trouble.  The task at hand? Steal 50 luxury cars in one night, with the help of several other car thieves.

The Fast and the Furious (2001)

This fast-paced automotive thriller from director Rob Cohen is the first instalment in the cult classic, The Fast and the Furious franchise. The movie tells the story of a youthful FBI agent, Brian O’Conner, played by the late Paul Walker. He begins investigating a series of hijackings by going undercover as Brian Earl Spilner with a street gang led by charismatic Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel). Spilner is soon caught up in Toeretto’s world of gang conflict often resolved by night car races. After Spilner falls in love with Toretto’s younger sister Mia (Jordana Brewster), he must decide where his loyalties lie when he becomes enthralled by the street racing world he has been sent undercover to destroy.

Fast & Furious (2009)

Eight years after the first instalment of this cult classic, Vin Diesel and Paul Walker return to the film franchise that helped launch their careers. Toretto and O’Connor team up to bring down a heroin importer by infiltrating his operation. This uncertain partnership of exploring thrilling new frontiers in the fine art of racing is one for the books.

Rush (2013)

Based on the true story of the great sportsmanship and epic rivalry between English playboy James Hunt, portrayed by Liam Hemsworth, and his tactical opponent, Nikki Lauda (Bruhl). Set against the fast paced sexy backdrop of the golden age of Formula 1 racing in the 1970s, the movie tells the story of these two prolific F1 racers and their distinctly different personal styles on and off the track. And what’s a great racing movie without romance? Their even more riveting love story  is beautifully captured in this drama.  Amidst this is a tale of two drivers who were willing to risk it all in a sport with zero margin of error: if you make a mistake, you die.
